2002scape

Retro online adventure game. No subscriptions or transactions. Free. Open source.

Getting started

As a new adventurer, you start in the small town of Lumbridge with only an axe, a tinderbox, and the clothes on your back.

It's not yet safe for you to cross White Wolf Mountain to the western lands, and you must become stronger first.

Food

There are many aggressive monsters in the world which will pose a threat to you, so it's essential to obtain a source of healing. There are several options:

Quests

Don't rush in to quests. Many quests are better saved for later, since they involve mandatory interactions with high-level aggressive monsters, and give scaling XP rewards. When starting out, aim to complete the following:

This should net you around 2000 coins with which to buy equipment from shops.

Collecting items

There is an Iron dagger near the starting area you may wish to find and pick up.

Most tools can be obtained from either the General Store in every city or from Bob's Axes. Someone may have left their pickaxe lying around in Rimmington and in Barbarian Village, and their hatchet somewhere upstairs in Falador...

The Wilderness also contains many treasures at its key locations, although it is obviously quite dangerous to go there, especially without a food source.

Becoming stronger

Unless you want to be fodder for Highwaymen, Muggers, and Wolves, you'll want to get your combat skills up quickly. At low levels, you will want to start by killing Chickens in Lumbridge, or Rats in Rimmington.

Many higher level players choose to train at key locations in the Wilderness in order to take advantage of the hordes of highly aggressive monsters there. Others go into dungeons or Melzar's Maze.

Skills

For more information, see the official manual.

Crafting is an essential skill that unlocks some of the most powerful equipment in the game.

Fletching is necessary to produce the most powerful Ranged equipment. Rare trees and other materials for fletching are mostly centred around Seer's Village.

Herblaw is used to produce powerful stat-boosting potions. It is unlocked after completing the Druidic Ritual quest, started in Taverley.

While Magic is useful, it requires rare rune stones in order to cast spells. These can be obtained by killing monsters, such as Darkwizards, and from shops in Varrock and Port Sarim.
